Poema / Poem

Mi corazón es la radio vieja
en la cocina de mi madre,
habitada por tecuejos,
donde escuchaba a Julio Jaramillo.

No me atrevo a prenderla.
Solo giro una perilla
y voy de AM a FM.

Permanezco de pie,
atraigo las frecuencias
y espero a que un sonido
me abra el pecho.

Mi madre, desde hace seis meses,
es un Gregorio Samsa en la cama:
no tiene antenas,
se le cayó el cabello.

Hay algo de Pedro Infante
en cambiar sus pañales:
siempre el pánico
al derramamiento,
la caída.

Durante la hora
en que mastica treinta gramos de pollo,
flota la estática
en la habitación.

My heart is the old radio
in my mother’s kitchen,
home to tecuejos,
where she used to listen to Julio Jaramillo.

I don’t dare turn it on.
I only twist a knob
and go from AM to FM.

I stay standing,
I draw in the frequencies
and wait for a sound
to break open my chest.

My mother, for six months now,
has been a Gregor Samsa in bed:
she has no antennae,
her hair has fallen out.

There is something of Pedro Infante
in changing her diapers:
always the panic
of the spill,
the fall.

During the hour
it takes her to chew thirty grams of chicken,
static floats
through the room.
